Moles round the track.

Since the track tidy up day back in October, Moles had been attempting to re cover the outside lane of the track in earth. There is an old wives tail that moles have a strong sense of smell and will move away from strong fragrances. It would appear that the Guisborough Moles are immune to Peppermint, as putting peppermint oil along the side of the track has had no effect (other than leaving the remembrance of Polo Mints).

Charlie Burke suggested that Moles are sensitive to vibration, so we are now trialing children’s wind mils along half of the sprint track in an attempt to drive the velvet coated menace away. (It is not a children’s party gone wrong).

If anybody has any other ideas for discouraging moles from building their spoil heaps on the track. Toby Jones would be interested in trialing them (Email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.)

Faced with an already crowded calendar, made worse by other events trying to arrange alternative dates following the weather on Sunday, we have decided to move this race to 28th October and replace the 10 Mile (only) race originally planned for that date.

Obviously those who who only want a 10 Mile race will still have one to run but it is also a chance still  race the 20 miles, perhaps as a "go for it" race rather than a prep race for a spring marathon.

Some might prefer chance to train for such a distance during the summer rather than winter months

  • *Pie & Peas 5 Mile - Wednesday 9th May 7.30pm TS10 1HA
  • Locke Park 10 Miler - Sunday 28th October 10.00am TS10 1HA see note above

An excellent mornings work was had by all, edging the track and leaf shifting.  Thanks to everyone involved. Also to Ian Howse, Charlie Burke and Steve Shaw who helped, but managed to avoid the photo!!

Watch this space for further alternative/ training sessions, mud included.  Tea/coffee and homemade cookies were also on tap!!!

North East Official of the Year

Toby Presentation

Wednesday 27th September was a special night for New Marske Harriers.  We not only had some outstanding performances on the track and field this year but we also won ‘Official of the Year’, from England Athletics, for the North East.

A presentation evening was held at Lumley Castle, in Chester-le-Street.  Toby Jones received the award from guest speaker Stephen Miller, (multiple para Olympian), for his work in making it possible for a lot of the competition tracks to be able to use photo finish equipment.

This has already proved invaluable to an under 13 girl doing multi-events recently who broke the UK points record.  As photo finish was used it was possible to claim the record.

Toby continues to put the infrastructure in place for this technology, and is running a course in November for people to learn how to use this equipment. If anyone is interested in photo finish please contact Toby on 07798872736.

A video of Toby training official to use the equipment can be seen here.

ǂNECAA Championship Race for 2017 – enter early for early bird prices!

All except Coast Road 5k races will be online entry only

Please note that after 20 years of having entries on the night future Coast Road 5k races will online entry only.

This is because the races have become increasingly popular and people who turn up after the race is full are understandably upset. We don't wish to have a situation where volunteers become embroiled in heated exchanges.

*The 5k races may be entered online only as part of the series entry when pre-entering all 5 race. However when the Mermaid 10k entries close, they will revert to entry on the night only as in previous years otherwise at Redcar Rugby Club from 5.30 on race day..

Entries for the other races will close 4 days before race day or when full – for last 3 years the 20 Miler and both 10k events were full weeks before.
