NYSD XC, Redcar ½ & Chester Marathon

Well done to all those who competed at the NYSD Cross Country at the weekend – it was good to see so many top three team performances – especially the Senior Men where we need 6 counters! To those men who didn’t manage to run this time please help keep the momentum going by running at some of the later fixtures as not everyone will be able to do them all – but this is our best start for many years.

Chester Marathon certainly is proving very popular – and there was some cracking performances:

  • Andy Pearson – 2:37:38
  • Martin Miles – 4:03:46
  • Phil Miles (Martin’s 74yo Dad) 4:19:14
  • Brenda Wilkin 3:43:37
  • Gemma Parkin 3:55:02
  • Trish Speedie 3:49:39
  • Andy Phinn 3:28:24
  • Carole Phinn 3:33:43
  • Alan Robson 4:14:08
  • Iain Povey 3:45:42

Again, it’s a few years since we had so many running in the same marathon!

Redcar Half Marathon was once again well supported by club members both as runners and helpers. Most worthy of mention in the Half Marathon were James Bulman who was 2nd Man & Kay Neesam who finished 2nd woman – although there was many pb’s further down the field. The new 5k event saw Sam Garratt and Clive Thornton 2nd & 3rd respectively, and whilst we had the first 3 home in the 1 mile fun run – the number of NMH juniors in the event was rather disappointing.

London Marathon Club Numbers.

Those who applied (and those who didn’t) for a London Marathon number and didn’t get one can apply to get one of the clubs 3 numbers via the online application

Club Chip Timing.

We would like to have more members being able to use the chip timing and results equipment. We are holding a training session at the Bowls Club in Locke Park at 10.30 on Saturday 11th Oct for about an hour. Anyone wishing to attend please let me know beforehand if possible.

New Coaches & Officials required

We are always in need of more coaches. We have to look increasingly to parents to step forward – in the past it was retired athletes that became coaches but you may have noticed they just keep on running. Many of our coaches became involved as parents rather than following an athletics career – so don’t be put off if you feel you don’t have any back ground. Here is a list of upcoming courses in the North East – if you feel that you could become a coach – then register with the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and then get in touch with me.

The sport also is in desperate need for more qualified officials. Here is a quote from the new guideline for permit applications (which I do for the NYSD track & field) :

Performances from competitions which do not have the appropriate Permit from UKA or the Home Country or designated Associations, or do not have sufficient numbers of suitably graded officials, will not be deemed to have been held under UKA Rules and no performances will be ratified or included within Power of10 rankings.

What this means, is that if anyone checks and finds that there not sufficient qualified officials at a meeting event, then all performances for the WHOLE meeting could be declared null & void. Parents would you like this to happen to your child’s PB? If you can give some of your time to attend a course and then officiate at some meetings then get in touch with me.

Locke Park 10 and 1 mile Fun Run

Entries are available until 23 Oct. This follow successful 20 mile and 5 mile events in Locke Park. As ever anyone able to volunteer please get in touch.

Presentation Evening.

Put the date in your diary Friday 5th December, actually you can do better than that tickets will be on sale from next week! Keep an eye on your email in box – as winners will be specifically invited.

Our Guest will be former middle distance international John Mayock who represented GB 58 times. We will have buffet, quiz with music and games in addition to the awards.

Help Required

For the past year Charlotte Ellis with a little help for me has been entering all the road race results onto the club database. However we urgently need some additional ongoing support, the same applies to forth-coming Indoor T&F season and into next outdoor season. All you need is an eye for detail and be comfortable using the internet. Please let me know if you are able to contribute to the effort.

New Monthly Award

Member of the Month.

This award has a category for Junior Members under 18 and Senior Members 18 and over.

It will allow the club to recognise achievements that are not necessarily catered for by our existing award structure. It could be for competing or volunteering. Preference will usually be to those who are unlikely to win on of the club's annual awards. The first award will be in November for OCTOBER. Click here for further details

Cross Country Relays

We have in recent year had teams of all age groups compete in the National Cross Relays at Mansfield, hopefully this year will be no different on Saturday 1st November – entries close at the weekend so if are able to compete please get in touch with Jon Pearce NOW email This email address is being protected from spambots. This has also been sent as an email to members - if you didn't get yours then perhaps its worth investigating!

2014 Track & Field Season

I have been asked by a couple of parents recently what the various competitions are. An explanation is available on the club website via this link with a fixture list via this link

The Track & Field season gets under way on Tuesday at Middlesbrough with the 1st NYSD fixture. In recent seasons the club has paid the fees for Junior Members to take part in this competition, however this has been extended to all members this year – provided that your 2014 subs have been paid! The programme for each fixture is different, get details here

To get your number (which you keep to use for all six fixtures) - see Helen Jones assisted by Bill Bingham at the first meeting and Stuart Carter (Stan) at the remaining fixtures.

Track & Field Awards

The season may not yet be under way yet but it’s not too soon to think about awards. Many athletes miss out on awards because they have not done enough of the correct types of events. Check for information on this here. Also those who competed last year will be eligible for the most improved award this year, but again you need to know which event you need to be doing – it is your best scoring event from 2013 – baseline scores are available here - the winner (male & female) will have biggest increase in the score for that or equivalent event.

As always we will be short of officials - so can I appeal to parents to lend a hand – you don’t need to be qualified. Many an international officiating career has started by just helping out!

Road Races

The club’s road race season continues with the Mermaid 10k on Good Friday. As you may be aware it has been full up for a few weeks. However there are some places becoming available so if you are on the waiting keep checking your emails. If however you are able to help on the day, we are still looking for additional volunteers so please contact Jim Conaghan This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Entries for the Pie & Peas 5 Miler in Locke Park are coming in steadily – our experience with the Mermaid 10k suggests that as the date gets nearer the places go more quickly (70 in the last weekend for the 10k!) – so don’t wait until the last minute. Click here to enteralso includes 1 mile run for fun for 5+ year olds.

If you are unsure about running 5 laps of Locke Park – then perhaps you should read the feedback from the 20 Miler. Even those who didn’t finish gave positive feedback and are looking forward to next year’s event on 15th March 2015. This was even more successful than I thought it could be!

A that reminder the entries are open for Redcar Half Marathon, which this year will also include a 5k and a 1 Mile Run for Fun for 5+ year olds. Early Entry discounts are available until the end of April – enter here

Good Luck to all that are running London this weekend - Marathon and Mini Marathon!

Presentation Night

This will be held at New Marske Sport Club on 25th April. Awards will be made for Cross Country, Fell Running, Christmas Handicaps, Indoor Athletics, and Minnows Awards – all minnows who competed throughout the winter will be getting an award.

Entry is by ticket available at club sessions on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday or by contacting Pam Best via This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

This was emailed to all members - if you didn't get the email then that means we don't have a correct email address for you.

I hope 2013 was everything that you hoped it would be, and that 2014 will be even better!

For 2014 set yourself something to aim for and then go for it - don't train hard - train well!

I attach information on our road races for 2014, for which online entries go live tomorrow, so you can enter when you get up (or you may prefer to do so before you go to bed!) - there is something there for everyone!

Please forward the attachment to anyone outside New Marske Harriers that you think will be interested.

Unfortunately 2013 saw the end of 25 years of support from Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council for our Victorian 10k - this means that neither of our 10k races has a sponsor - so if you have any contacts that could put some sponsorship our way please let me know.

All the best and Happy New Year

Graham Hall, Chairman

NYSD Whitby Cross Country Officials

As New Marske Harriers are not hosting a fixture this season we are required to provide a couple of officials to timekeep and record finishing positions. Anyone who is able to help please let me know ASAP This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

We are always short of timekeepers and track judges, and to a lesser extent field judges for track & field meetings. Apart from relieving pressure from those officials that we do have – you can actually earn points for our teams! There are still places available for Level 2 courses at Gateshead on November 10thclick here for an application form.

Road Races

This is the final weekend of the New Marske Harriers 2012-13 Road Race Season – please check that your races are correct and that your best ones are being used according to the rules. The results are up to date, upto & including Sunday. The same applies to the parkrun tables. Any races in far flung places this weekend, omissions or amendments let us know via email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Track & Field

London Marathon

The club has three guaranteed entries for London Marathon 2014 – if you would like to apply for one of them then click here . If a draw is required – it will be made on 6th Dec at the Presentation Night

Volunteers

You will see from the Roll of Honour click here that we have many members, parents and/or friends that turn out to help the club.

Many thanks to them all!

Whilst I wouldn’t want to diminish the value of those who react to the rallying call and for instance, turn up to marshal at our road races, we are desperately short of members/parents taking up the more proactive roles. Particularly roles that need weekly commitment such as coaching (click here if you are interested in coaching) but also roles that are more administrative and not necessarily weekly such as volunteer co-ordinator and press officer to name two – if you are able to consider such a role then please let me know.

We are always short of timekeepers and track judges, and to a lesser extent field judges for track & field meetings. Apart from relieving pressure from those officials that we do have – you can actually earn points for our teams! There is a Level 2 course at Gateshead on November 10thclick here for an application form.

Road Races

Dates for our 2014 Road Races including 2 new races can be found here

The New Marske Harriers road race season closes at the end of October. As far as we are aware all results are on our database up to and including Redcar Half Marathon – please check by clicking here The parkrun championship tables are not quite up to date – but hopefully they will be soon.

Cross Country Championships

The North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships will be held at South Shields on December 14th. The club pays fees for those that wish to be entered (you may be asked to refund this if you DO NOT run, and don’t have a legitimate excuse).

Please let Jon Pearse know by 11th November at the latest. Let him know in person at training, at NYSD or preferably by email:  This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Track & Field

Final positions for all the awards are yet to be finalised – however I think all performances have been recorded – please check and let me know if there are any missing  - click here for the 2013 database

There are a few indoor meeting coming up – don’t forget there is now an annual award for Indoor T&F performances attained over the winter – check here for fixtures
