NORTH EASTERNS SATURDAY 12th DECEMBER

 Updated Report from Jon Pearse

NEW MARSKE COME AWAY WITH 1 SILVER AND 2 BRONZE MEDALS

This years North Easterns were definitely not for the faint hearted. The first races were run in heavy rain which then turned to sleet and then heavy steady snow. The undulating parkland course just got muddier and slushier as the day progressed making for extremely testing conditions.

Despite the weather we had some brilliant results from a competition that had a record number of entries. The U13 boys race was the 1st of the day and gave us our first medal when Archie Lowe ran a strong race to clinch the bronze medal. Matt Chinnock (38) and Seb Pearson (51) also had good runs

In the U13 girls we had 4 runners who all ran good solid races. They were Charlotte Bennet (20)  Ruby Whitney (23) Emily Brown (28) and Lucy Nicklin (33)

Unfortunately we had no U 15 boy entries but had a great turn out of u15 girls with 5 runners. Rebeca Tilley (6) Elicia Smith (9) and Jordan Thrower(20) brought the team a bronze medal only a few points away from a silver. Freya Bourke (34) and Phoebe Jennings (42) also had good  runs

In the U 17 women Eli Barnbrook (4) had a strong run and missed out on a bronze by a couple of seconds. Sam Garratt (11) in his first year in the U20 men ran solidly in what is always a very competitive age category

In the senior men we only had 2 runners which was a big disappointment. Paul Brown(53) in his 1st N Easterns had an excellent run in what is always a high quality field. With good weather always guaranteed he is sure to be back for more! Jon Pearse (392) just about made it round and probably the less said the better. As with the senior men there was a very small turn out for the senior women but both Lisa Bennett (37) and Trish Speedie (108) had tremendous runs and I am sure really appreciated having 410 men doing their best to chew up the course on 4 laps just before their race. At least they cleared the snow!

The best was kept until last for New Marske when Hassan Ben Tiba ran an excellent race to take silver with Harry Allen (5) not far behind in the U17 mens race.

Congratulations must be given to all the runners for their efforts in very trying conditions. It has got to be a lot easier next time! A big thank you to Graham Hall for doing the results all day although he did have the perk of at least being inside! The biggest thank you must go to Toby Jones who was timekeeping nearly all day for the club and must have been absolutely soaked through and frozen as even the best gear couldn’t keep the weather out for as long as he had to stand there -  at least the competitors could run to keep warm and then go home.

Elsewhere Kath Aspin was 1st lady in the Hardmoors Roseberry Half Marathon over a 14.85 mile course which included climbing Highcliff Nab twice, Roseberry Topping twice and Captain Cooks Monument.
