North Eastern Counties XC 2012
Another great day at the North Eastern Counties Cross Country Championships at Summerhill Park Hartlepool. Following on from Ricky Stevenson’s win last year, Andy Wiles took over the mantle and won the Senior Men’s Title. On a course that could only be described as muddy! Andy went out fast with a narrow lead at the first of four water jumps (see video!). He continued to dominate the race but never held a lead of more than about 30m from his nearest challengers. A late fall on the final descent, reduced his lead but he still had time to jog the home straight and take the applause. We also had 3 other runners in the top 10, with Dom Shaw 6th, Russ Best 8th and Shaun O’Grady 10th. New Marske men’s team came 5th with Tom Danby 36th, Andy Pearson 45th and Darren Bell 124th the other counters. (We would have been 2nd Team had Dom Shaw not been a late entry.) Team Manager Jon Pearse, safely sat in the tent, came as close to winning as he ever will with the tannoy announcer congratulating him on his 6th place!
Frances Bell, with another year yet to go in the U13 race, had a great run to finish just outside the medals in 4th place in the U13 girls race. Sam Garratt was 6th in the U15 boys and Wayne Parker 10th in the U20 men. Kath Aspin was best placed in the senior women’s race in 33rd with Jill Sexton and Amanda Waller completing the ladies team.
NYSD Croft XC - 18/11/12
With James Bulman and Shaun O’Grady coming 4th and 5th in the Brampton to Carlisle 10m race, Russ Best 17th, Andy Pearson 124th, Phil Miles 2056th & Philip Stone 3811th in the Leeds Abbey Dash not to mention Kay Neesam winning the Clay Bank Fell race, there were lots of races on offer to compete with a muddy XC at Croft.
28 Junior’s were again out in force including 7 minnows running for the first time. Charlie Pasco stormed off out in front and this time managed to beat the leading U17 girl Bronwen Owen by a considerable distance.
In the Senior Ladies Race Lisa Bennett made her debut as a New Marske Member and came home a fine 19th, 2nd V40 helping the team to 4th place with Kath Aspin 11th, Kyah Hall 24th and Jo Goldsmith 32nd.
Alan Piggford was 5th, Clive Thornton 41st, Nick O’Grady 96th and Tony Slater 107th with the men not having enough members to make a team up.
The next race is at Filey on the 2nd December.
National Cross Country Relays - 03/11/12
Many thanks to Jon Pease for the effort he put in to pull the teams together despite some late withdrawals. The New Marske U13’s showed the seniors how to do it by entering 5 teams. The start line appeared very narrow, those with good upper body strength performing well to hold the competition back! The girls came away with 36th, 81st and 87th with all the girls, sporting their National XC Hoodies, enjoying the experience. The boy’s team’s came a good 53rd and 77th.
Patrick, Josh and Sam all had good runs to come home 53th out of 81 teams in the U15 Boys.
In the ladies race, Sharon Bulman (11:53) ran the first leg against some of the faster runners to take New Marske through in 62nd. Kath Aspin (12:12) moved us up to 50th before a storming run by Bobbi Philips (11:27) took the ladies to 36th out of 102 quality teams.
Andy Wiles (15:36) briefly lead the way for New Marske on the 1st leg of the senior race and had a good run to 6th place for the leg. Alan Piggford (17:15) was pleased with knocking 1 minute off last year’s time. Russ Best (16:20) had a good run through the field and thanks to Darren Bell (20:33) for taking on the anchor leg at the last minute. The men finished in 50th place out of 157 teams.
Thanks also to those who ran in incomplete teams including Clive Thornton and Izzy Pearse.
NYSD Whitby XC - 27/10/12
Ricky shows his class
New Marske's Ricky Stevenson returned to cross country action at Caedmon School Whitby on Saturday. After sitting in the pack for the first couple of laps Ricky turned up a gear and stretched away to win in 30:56 by over a minute from Greg Jayasuriya from Middlesbrough & Cleveland with Paul White from Middlesbrough Mandale in 3rd. In the ladies / U17 men's race, U17 Guest Annabel Mason from Wakefield lead the way, managing to pip U17 man Charlie Pasco from New Marske who beat her in the first race at Acklam. Hartlepool's Tracey Waller came home 2nd lady with Charlotte Sanderson 3rd. Kath Aspin was 1st V45 in 9th place and Izzy Pearse 3rd U17. Again there were lots of juniors out with the U15 boys of Sam Garratt, Patrick Wilson and Josh McMillan winning the team competition.
