This years North Easterns were held at East Cramlington Nature reserve. The course was undulating but running conditions were pretty good with not too many very muddy areas. Although the breeze was stiff at times on the whole conditions were pretty favourable.

The 1st race was the U13 boys at 11am who had a 2.9k race. This was the only race of the day where we had a team and our three runners did really well to be 5th team. Adam Mcmillan was our best runner in 18th (11.59) followed by Elliott Metcalfe in 26th (12.22) and Ben Bergstrand in 36th (13.06) who had a great sprint race at the end and narrowly lost out to someone nearly twice his size.

In the U13 girls we had only 2 runners. Eli Barnbrook had a great run to come home in 13th place (13.05) and Hannah Raine came in with a smile on her face in 37th (14.52)

The U15 age group had a 4.2k course. The boys were led home by Sam Garratt in 22nd (16.52) and supported by Josh Mcmillan in 42nd (18.31). In the girls version Jordyn English was first New Marske runner in 19th (19.23) followed by Izzy Pearse in 22nd (19.55)

The U17 women’s race gave us our first medal of the day. Chloe Loredo had a great run in her 4.9k race coming in 3rd (20.04) narrowly fighting off a strong challenge for her medal at the line. Katie Coulson was our only other runner and finished a creditable 10th (22.00)

The senior men’s race of 12.1k was the main event with 292 finishers. Ricky Stevenson settled in to the leading pack early on closely followed by Andy Wiles. Ricky shadowed the leading runner until the beginning of the 3rd and final lap when he stepped on the gas and won comfortably by 18 seconds in 39.09 to give us our 1st gold medal of the day. Andy Wiles continued to run strongly to finish just out of the medals in 4th (40.49) Richard Morrell was our 3rd finisher in 43.20 followed by Alan Piggford in 20th in 44.41 minutes. To have 4 in the top 20 is a superb result and testament to the hard training they put in under Steve Shaw

The senior women ran 8.2k and we unfortunately only had one runner but Bobbi Phillips ran a really strong race to finish 8th in 34.15 out of a field of 109 finishers.

We had to wait for the final race of the day to get our other gold medal in the U17 men’s race. Wayne Parker ran a really mature race sitting in 3rd position to begin with before moving up in to 2nd during the first large lap. He waited to the start of the small lap to make his move in to the lead and consolidated his position to win in 22.36 13 seconds ahead of his nearest rival.

Overall it was a good day for the club with some superb individual performances. We could however have brought home several team medals with more runners out. We will always loose people through illness and injury but had we had more entries in the first place we could have made a good day a great one!

NYSD Croft 04/12/11

It certainly felt like in the bleak mid winter at Croft on Sunday and some of the children were saying let it snow.  I didn't see Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer but there were plenty of people with Red Noses and you could tell Christmas is coming.  Wayne Parker (pictured) won the U17 race by nearly a minute.  In the senior race Adam Blowers came a fine 7th.  Clive Thornton having managed to finish 53rd each time in his last three outings improved to come 36th.  Kath Aspin was 9th in the ladies race with Louise Danby next home in 33rd. George Geldart came 9th in the U11 race,  Adam McMillan 7th in the U13, Frances Bell 11th in the U13 girls and Izzy Pearse 10th in the U15 girls. Lots more Harriers were out and the full results are below.

Mark books his ticket to Slovenia

Following his excellent 3rd place run at Sefton Park on Saturday Mark Shaw has been selected in the AVIVA GB & NI team for the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Velenje, Slovenia on Sunday 11 December.

Despite being one the youngest competitors in the U20 race at Sefton, Mark had an excellent race and such is his confidence he was disappointed not to win!  " I have to be pleased with that,” said Shaw. “It was always the intention to stick in as long as I could and perhaps go on and win.  However, while that didn’t happen, to get onto the team at the first time of asking is pretty good.”

In a strong senior race at Sefton with 525 runners there were also good runs for Ricky Stevenson 17th, Richard Morrell 36th, Lewis Moses 40th and Nasir Hussain 144th.
