Ricky Stevenson was the first Aviva GB & NI team athlete home in ninth (24:34) after a confident performance on the fast course. “I couldn’t ask for a lot more,” said the New Marske Harrier who was amongst the leaders within the final third of the 8170m race. “Every time I go out in the team vest I give it my best shot. The pace was never a problem although I started to suffer a bit coming into the last lap and I just couldn’t respond, but overall I felt good. It was a fast course and I think it probably suited me more as a track runner than it did the other guys.”
The under-23 men did well to finish fourth after Trials winner James Wilkinson was forced to drop out early in the race. Having suffering from a slight temperature since arriving in Portugal he made the brave decision to start “to have a go for the team”, but paid the price for his commitment and stepped off the course in the first large lap.
At the McCain Cross Challange meeting at Sefton Park, Liverpool on Saturday 27th November, Ricky Stevenson finished 8th overall and 2nd Under-23 to secure an automatic place in the GB team for SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira, Portugal on Sunday 12 December 2010 (event will be covered live via BBC Website/BBC TV Red Button). There was solid performances from Andy Wiles 41st and Russ Best 72nd in the same race. In the Under-20 race Mark Shaw finished 42nd.
Junior Xmas Handicap Race
New Marske Harriers Junior Xmas Handicap Races took place on Tuesday 28th December 2010. The races are normally held on the trails around Guisborough Forest and Walkway. However, a week before the scheduled race date, the trails at Guisborough were covered in thick ice and snow, and with no let up in the weather forecast, the decision was made to re-locate to Redcar Beach. The decision was made early to enable the information to be circulated and hopefully everyone was aware of the revised details in good time.
Conditions on race day at Redcar were pretty grey with light rain. The pavements were still covered in snow and ice and even the sand dunes were snow-covered. However, the lower part of the beach provided an ideal location to run with firm sand and no snow!!
