Amy Carter1

Well done to Amy Carter competing at the Northern Indoor Championships at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield at the weekend.

Going through the heats & semi-final she qualified for the final & finished 5th in a very close final in a time of 9.85secs just just shy of her PB of 9.79 set at the same venue before Christmas.

Six Go Off to Jarrow (with apologies to Enid Blyton)

Report by Charlie Burke

One fine, sunny day, six eager, nervous athletes set off for the 50 mile journey north to Monkton Stadium for the NE Outdoor Pentathlon Championships. Each athlete, Amy Carter, Charlotte Bennett, Chris Whiles, Elicia Smith, Lucas Pentland and Ruby Whitney were concerned about different aspects of this five event challenge, which they had not experienced before.

The day started for the younger athletes with the hurdles. Elicia and Amy were placed first in their age groups, with Charlotte, Lucas and Ruby putting in good performances. Chris meanwhile was throwing the discus for the first time competitively. Next the younger group moved onto the long jump, all except Lucas jumping below their season’s best. A pb for Lucas. Amy just missing a pb in her long jump. Chris' second event, the 200m went well for him.
Next up, the high jump a new event for the four U13s, so all pb'ed. Amy again just one clearance short of her pb. Chris was next into another new event for him, the long jump.
Fourth event, shot putt, new to three under 13's who all recorded pbs. Amy putting a big pb in her competition. Chris' fourth event was javelin in which he was rightly confident in doing well, throwing 33m to win that event.

Onto the final event, holding much trepidation for each athlete for individual reasons. The four younger athletes running first. Charlotte ended up saving her best to last running to a whacking 6 second pb in 2-34.3, taking her from 11th place into 6th in the final placings. Elicia ran slightly below par but leapfrogged into 3rd from 4th and became our one medal winner of the day, and just 4 points off the club record. Amy was left to last but one race and dreading the event ran above all her expectations to finish 2nd in a new pb of 2-41.7 to finish 4th and 60 points behind 3rd but improved New Marske Harriers U15 girls' pentathlon record by a massive 750 points. Chris finished his day with a strong run in his 800 to finish 2nd.

So they all had a lovely day and went home for sandwiches and lemonade.
Congratulations to them all from coach Charlie.
