In what is likely to be last county championship held in May, there was a quite a few medals and pbs for New Marske Harriers’ members on day one, but the closest finish of the day was in the Sen 1500m where Richard Morrell and Andy Wiles in a slow time (for them) finished 1st & 2nd – Richard clocking 5:59.58 – 3/100 of second ahead of Andy. In u17 1500 Charlie Pasco won in a pn 4:06.42, there were pbs for Josh & Adam McMillan in their 1500m races. In 800m there was a routine win for Chloe Loredo who earlier in the week had set a new club record of 2:14.74 at the School Games at the Olympic Park. Also in 800m there was pb for Amy Carter
Amy Carter and Hannah Raine both made it into 200m final where they both ran pbs
More to follow…
In very windy, cold conditions Chris Jones (Ducey) won u17 Hammer, but Jess Rogers had to settle for silver but set a new Sen / U20 Club record of 34.97 - beating the 33.28 mark set by Natasha Simpson in 1994 before Jess was born! There was also a gold medal in the field events for Charlotte Sutherland in the u15g Shot.
On the track there was another win for Chalie Pasco following up his 1500m on day 1 - this time in the 3000m. In the 1500m Chloe Loredo set a Championship Best Performance of 4:41.03, in the 1500S/C a lone Katie Coulson also set CBP which was also her worst performance in the event!
Patrick Wilson won a bronze medal and pb 2:10.27 in 800m
Tees Barrage 10k 7th May 2012
A sunnier Bank Holiday Monday than expected although still a bit windy by the river at the Tees Barrage 10k. A place where the wind always appears to be in your face and there are many 180
degree turns it isn't the fastest course around but this didn't deter the New Marske Hariers who took home a good prize haul between them. First was Mark Gamble-Thompson in an impressive 7th place overall and 1st Vet 50. Erin Pearson was 3rd open lady in a new personal best time. John Rymer made a good return to form next followed by Brain Allen. Next Ronnie Sherwood and Phil Miles were 2nd and 3rd O70 Vets respectively. With good runs also from Jim Conaghan, Jon Smith, Tony Slater and Julian Wilkinson.

Marathon of the North 6th May 2012.
Podium finish for Andy
A brand new marathon, organised by running legend Steve Cram took place last Sunday. Over 1500 runners completed the inaugural event which saw the competitors hit the bleaker streets of Sunderland before moving on to the more picturesque parks and costal vistas. The route was certainly varied, roads, coastal paths, parks, car parks and college fields all formed part of the challenge. Described by the organisers as flat but don’t be fooled it was definitely rolling.
The race was well organised utilising the good facilities at The Stadium of Light meaning there was not the usual queues for the loos. Support was sparse to begin with but got more encouraging as the race progressed and if the event becomes established then the support can only grow. The marshals were enthusiastic and supportive and there was a real spirit of camaraderie amongst the competitors and no shortage of smiles.
Onto the race itself which was won by Hartlepool’s Paul Wilson in 2:43:31 pushed close by Andrew Pearson in 2nd who is clearly benefitting from the improved training offered by New Marske Harriers 2:46:29 (New PB). Andrew Sugden was the next NMH home in an impressive 8th place with another new PB finishing in 2:55:47 smashing the sub 3 hour target he’d set for himself.
Other NMH finishers were Paul Cleasby 3:09:09 completing his second marathon in two weeks. Andrew Phinn 3:30:06, Melanie Carlton 3:31:43, Carole Phinn 3:32:09, Sarah Rogers 3:42:30 and Christopher Kelly who timed his sub 4 hour run to perfection with a time of 3:59:29.
All in all I hope this race becomes a regular fixture on the north east racing calendar, the route may need tweaking, the support will grow but it was certainly a brilliant day out.

It has been a frustrating week looking out for the YAL result, no less so to find that they were actually out there on the web - just not where they SHOULD have been. Hopefully that will now correct itself.
I wanted to do a full report on Monday but lack of results prevented this - however at the moment I will just highlight the two club records that I am aware of:
In the YAL, Hannah Raine u13 Girl High Jump 1.35 previously set by Johanna Jackson at 1.34 in 1997 and
In the BUCS held at the Olympic Park, Russ Best set a new mark for Open 5000m of 14:29.47 previously held by Mark Shaw (u20) at 14:37.2 set last year.
A fuller report will follow
Carlton Challenge 2nd May 2012
After a well-earned between series break of 2 whole days, the NEHRA Summer Series kicked off with the Carlton Challenge. The conditions were slightly better than Sunday, although the mist did cause a few problems (for first-timers like me) on the final descent. Jim Bulman was the overall winner – his 6 minute/mile pace from the off really sorted out the field, and he finished nearly a minute ahead of Cameron Taylor (Esk Valley). If Jim can complete his quota of races I’m sure it will be an interesting battle for top spot. In the women’s race Kay Neesam renewed her personal battle with Nicola Kent (Loftus and Whitby). Kay was clearly back to full fitness and finished 1st, over a minute ahead of Nicola, with Shelli Gordon close behind in 3rd. It was good to see Mick McGurk back in action, finishing 86th overall, and Ronnie Sherwood just keeps on going with yet another 1st in the M70 (91st overall). I was pleased to make the top 50 for a second consecutive race (50th overall). Kay and Shelli’s 1st and 3rd meant that even with a “ghost runner” they comfortably won the women’s team event. Despite Jim’s win, the men’s team only managed 9th, but this was the only blip on an otherwise excellent night for New Marske! In the junior race there were good runs from Thomas Aspin and Katie Thornton with Thomas coming 3rd.

Many thanks to all those who attended the presentation at Redcar Rugby Club on 23rd January.

The slideshow was an attempt to identify what type of skills, time committment, and where vounteers are requred. Even so some people still found it a little overwhelming.
If you were at the meeting or if you missed it, please take time to look it and try to identify what could be done either by yourself or you and a group of friends/family.
If in doubt, do something.
