Whitby NYSD 19 Feb 2012

Not sure whether it was the lure of a fish and chip tea or a visit to one of his favourite cross country courses, but Andy Wiles followed on from his good run in the relays the previous day to win convincingly at Whitby. Alan Piggford also made the top 3 edging out Paul Butler from Loftus. New Marske again had their best turnout in the U11’s with 8 runners, George Geldart and Amy Carter coming out best in 4th and 5th. Eli Barnbrook was 10th in the U13’s, Patrick Wilson 5th in the U15 boys and Izzy Pearse 13th in the U15 girls. With many of the ladies having run the in the relays, Janet Todd was our sole representative in the senior race coming home in 34th.
NYSD Richmond Cross Country 5th Feb 2012
Andy wins by miles
On a day with a bitterly cold wind and testing conditions underfoot the commitment of the New Marske U11’s should mean the club has a bright future. New Marske had 6 of the 12 starters in the U11 race with Scott McKenna 1st, Georgia Stockdale 3rd, Ben McKenna 7th, Thomas Aspin 8th, Dominic Shipman 11th and Elliott Stockdale 12th. With the Inter Schools Cross Country having taken place the previous day there were only 3 other juniors, with Eli Barnbrook 7th and Rebecca Aspin 12th in the girls U13 and Wayne Parker 3rd in the U17 Boys.
Not sure what happened to the all the New Marske seniors, but Andy Wiles showed the rest of the field how he beat Kenenisa Bekele and Brimin Kirupto. Having decided not to follow a mystery runner who sped off on the first lap, he pulled away on the second lap and went on to win the race by nearly 2 minutes in preparation for his International 5K in Armagh on Thursday 9th February. In the ladies race Kath Aspin was our sole representative and came home a fine 9th after a battle with Michelle Scott from Aycliffe.
The final meeting of the series will be at Caedmon School, Whitby on Sunday 19th February.
Several New Marske Harriers members will be representing their Schools County Teams (Cleveland and N Yorks) on Saturday - and except for the youngest age group, will be hoping to make it through to the National Schools Cross Country Championships on 17th March in Somerset.

NORTHERN CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS
Mark Shaw storms home to take Junior Men's Title
Mark taking the junior men’s title was the highlight of a great day for the club with 4 runners taking top 15 positions in this highly competitive meeting that attracts runners from as far south as Lincs, Derbyshire and Cheshire.
Pontefract racecourse was the venue for this year’s championship and provided us with various combinations of laps. There was an uphill start followed by a long downhill then a long haul back up to the finish which all runners agreed, seemed a lot further than the distance markers showed!

Our Senior men just failed to hold off Morpeth in the Durham Catherdral relays on Sunday. After the first leg Russ Best handed over to Andy Wiles in 4th place just under 20s off the lead, having run 9:10. Andy clawed this back with a leg of 8:52 and handed over to Mark Shaw in first place, but with only a narrow 1s advantage. The more experienced Matt Nichoson, Morpeth's final leg runner, sat in behind Mark for the majority of the two legs in the blustery conditions. Only in the final 800m did he push on to open 3second advantage at the finish. Mark ran his leg in 8:59.
