Carlton Challenge 2nd May 2012
After a well-earned between series break of 2 whole days, the NEHRA Summer Series kicked off with the Carlton Challenge. The conditions were slightly better than Sunday, although the mist did cause a few problems (for first-timers like me) on the final descent. Jim Bulman was the overall winner – his 6 minute/mile pace from the off really sorted out the field, and he finished nearly a minute ahead of Cameron Taylor (Esk Valley). If Jim can complete his quota of races I’m sure it will be an interesting battle for top spot. In the women’s race Kay Neesam renewed her personal battle with Nicola Kent (Loftus and Whitby). Kay was clearly back to full fitness and finished 1st, over a minute ahead of Nicola, with Shelli Gordon close behind in 3rd. It was good to see Mick McGurk back in action, finishing 86th overall, and Ronnie Sherwood just keeps on going with yet another 1st in the M70 (91st overall). I was pleased to make the top 50 for a second consecutive race (50th overall). Kay and Shelli’s 1st and 3rd meant that even with a “ghost runner” they comfortably won the women’s team event. Despite Jim’s win, the men’s team only managed 9th, but this was the only blip on an otherwise excellent night for New Marske! In the junior race there were good runs from Thomas Aspin and Katie Thornton with Thomas coming 3rd.
