Signals Road Relays 2012 Result

                WOMEN TAKE SILVER

New Marske Harriers again excelled at the Signals relays held at Hetton Lyons Country Park .The brisk cold wind with the occasional wintry shower meant that running on the undulating course was always hard. The mens race consisted of 6 legs and the womens 4 legs, each leg consisted 2 laps totalling 2.25 miles. This year there were over 100 entries with all the races starting at 1pm. This mass start, combined with the 2 laps resulted in a fairly manic change over area but excellent viewing for all the spectators. New Marske ran 2 mens and 2  womens teams and half a vet womens team
The senior mens team were led off by Mark Shaw who took the lead at the end of the 1st lap and gradually extended it to hand over to Alan Piggford with a 15 second lead. Both Alan and Russ Best who took over the 3rd leg ran very well to hold off the chasing Gateshead and Morpeth runners. It was only during Nasir Hussains 4th leg that we momentarily dropped back to 3rd place . Ricky Stevenson, who had been ill during the week, still ran a storming leg to take us in to a commanding lead. Rickys time of 10.09 was the fastest of the day and also a new course record taking 7 seconds off the previous time. Given the blustery conditions to beat these records was a superb effort. Andy Wiles then brought the team home to win by a massive 70 seconds and breaking the course record by 18 seconds. In this team effort Mark ran the 3rd fastest time of the day Andy the 4th and Russ the 5th fastest legs.
In the mens B team Charlie Pascoe in his 1st senior relay ran an extremely mature leg to finish 8th in a time that would have qualified him for an A team place. Our B team also had Shaun O’Grady, Steve Guest, Clive Thornton ,Andy Sugden and Adam Blowers competing all of whom ran excellent legs to give us 16th place in a very competitive field. Full results are attached.
In the womens race Chloe Loredo took the 1st leg and handed over to Sharon Bulman (Nee Thornton) in 3rd place. The teams position varied between 3rd and 4th as Sharon handed over to Kath Aspin on the 3rd leg. Bobbi Phillips brought us home to silver getting past the Durham team. In this team Chloe ran the 6th and Bobbi the 7th fastest legs of the day. Our womens B team finished a very creditable 21st with Katie Coulson (who was also ill and volunteered to give up her 1st team place), Kyah Hall, Nicola Kydd and Anne Guthrie . Last but not least our Vets ladies were led off by Pam Best and followed by Jill Sexton.
Overall another great day for New Marske and finally a big thank you to Graham Hall & Richard Dowson for sitting in a garage all afternoon doing the results and thereby missing all the action while they did them.
