Olympic Dawn 5K - 18/06/12
The debate is still on about whether it is worth getting up at 4am to take part in a 5K race, but a number of Harriers set their clocks early and joined nearly 300 others in the Olympic Dawn 5K. The finish of the event was timed to coincide with the Olympic Torch leaving the Transporter Bridge at about 6.30am on Monday morning. Every runner was provided with a FREE technical T-shirt and people were queuing to get them as we arrived at just before 5am. The race itself was on a flat and fast course around the local college and MFC. Despite not taking it too seriously there were some good times and everybody enjoyed the race in still and calm conditions. On our return to the Transporter Bridge we were filmed live on ITV breakfast television. Many of the runners then joined the crowds following the Olympic Flame after it had crossed the Tees on the Transporter Bridge. Later in the day Thomas Aspin was lucky enough to carry Doug Welsh’s real Olympic Torch in a mini relay organised by Guisborough Schools.
