Relays 1

New Marske in the medals

Report by Clive Thornton

The NYSD Cross Country league wrapped up with the road relays at Croft racing circuit. A fine weather morning slowly changed to a windy drizzly day by the time the seniors were racing.

In the senior relays the ladies unusually did not field a team with the competing attractions of marathon training and fell races. The New Marske men came up trumps with two complete teams.

The men’s relay was four legs of just over 2miles each leg. Nasir Hussain led off for the 'A's on the first leg with Simon Clements leading off for the 'B's. Loftus and Whitby's Paul Butler took off to an early lead with Hartlepool in 2nd and New Marske in 3rd with Middlesbrough in close order, by the end of the leg Loftus and Hartlepool were neck and neck, Nasir was in 3rd some 75 metres adrift but had distanced Middlesbrough by about the same. Simon returning from time out was running well in the top 10. Clive Thornton took over on the second leg, hoping not to lose 3rd and give Charlie Pasco not too much work to do, by the end of the leg Loftus had consolidated their lead, but Hartlepool's second place hung by a 30 metre thread. Adam Walker ran a great leg pulling back 4 places to close on a top 5 finish. Charlie Pasco fresh from the indoor championships a day earlier had soon overhauled Hartlepool's third leg runner to take New Marske into second and  by the end of the leg he had closed on Loftus to give Dom Shaw a shout at victory. Paul Cleasby took over from Adam and kept the 'B's in good position, handing over to Jon Pearse for a rare relay outing.

Meanwhile Dom running the final leg stormed through the first kilometre visibly closing on Loftus's runner, but was there distance and time?

Anxiously spectators and team-mates watched for a blue or red vest at the start of the finish straight, it was blue, Dom had overhauled Loftus by a good margin and cruised home to claim victory for New Marske and in doing so setting the fastest time of the day in 9:45. Charlie set the 2nd fastest time in 9:56.

NMH juniors although only fielding a small team had great success at the Croft relays.

In the U 13 boys race where 2 of the runners had only just turned 11 we came a very creditable 3rd with Archie Lowe running a great 3rd leg  and got within 4 seconds of making up a 44 second deficit. Dominic Shipman was the 1st leg runner coming home in 5th. George Geldart took us up to 3rd and Archie nearly made it 2nd. James Geldart ran a very strong 1st leg in an incomplete team. In the U13 girls Oriana Larkin was our only runner but ran strongly.

The u15 boys had a great battle with Middlesbrough. Reece Curtis came in 2nd, 8 seconds behind after the 1st leg. Morgan Speirs took over and made up 2 seconds. Hassan Ben-Tiba tucked in behind the leader and over took him on the long straight in to the wind and then eased away to win by 23 seconds. Ben Bergstrand and Tom Geldart both ran great legs as did Eli Barnbrook in the girls U15 race.
