Locke Park 20 - 9th March 2014 Report
Around 100 runners converged on Locke Park in Redcar for the inaugural 20 mile race hosted by New Marske Harriers AC. Following on from the success of the Redcar parkrun, the event supported by Sainsbury’s Local in Redcar raised £800 for the Friends of Locke Park and £50 for the Bowling Club. Runners were attracted from all over the North East and beyond including Tom Williams, Managing Director of parkrun UK and presenter of the weekly podcast MarathonTALK who said “In fifteen years of racing triathlons and running events this was one of the best experiences I've had. The organisation and marshalling was absolutely brilliant, on the first of 20 laps the encouragement from the volunteers was amazing and somehow they managed to keep it up for the entire event. Will definitely be back next year and highly recommend this event to anyone looking to do a spring marathon. Brilliant.”
In the race, Andy Pearson of New Marske Harriers was first home in 2:01:22 setting a new V40 Club record followed by Paul Darroch (2:03:47) of Redcar Running Club and Steve Middleton of Thirsk & Sowerby in 2:07:05. In the Ladies, Hannah Oldroyd from Bingley cruised to victory in 2:14:24 followed by Kath Aspin (2:32:38) of New Marske Harriers and Rachel Terry of Elvet Striders in 2:33:15.
In a change from most races, prizes were awarded in order of Age Grading, a way of putting all race participants on a level playing field, regardless of age or gender. 1st prize was awarded to Shirley Gibson Vet65 of Darlington, Andy Pearson Vet40 received second and Pam Costello V60 of Redcar Runners was third.
