A top field of North East 5K runners attended the second race in the increasing popular New Marske Harriers Road Race Series. With numbers up 72% on the same race last year, everybody was hoping for a lovely calm spring evening at the Coast Road Redcar. Alas, from being still a couple of hours before the race, a cold 20 mph wind arrived in the hour before the race providing Baltic conditions and a strong headwind for half of the race including the 1.2 km home straight.
1st home in an excellent 14:43 given the conditions was 2013 English 10k Champion Matty Hynes now representing Gateshead Harriers. New Marske’s Andy Wiles was 2nd in 15:09, Lewis Timmins from Morpeth 3rd in 15:29 & Russ Best also of New Marske 4th in 15:37.
In the Ladies race, Sarah Wilkinson of Morpeth was 1st in 17:45, Kristina Grant of Middlesbrough Mandale 2nd in 18:18 and Kay Neesam of New Marske 3rd in 19:19.
1st junior’s home, both in 16:28, were New Marske’s Sam Garratt and Hassan Ben-Tiba who could not be split following their battle down the home straight.
The Prizes for this race were awarded in order of Age Related %, this allows a comparison of athletes of different ages and sexes against what they are expected to achieve. 1st place went to vet40 Sarah Wilkinson 88.68% with Ian Bloomfield, who recently set the all time Vet 60 British Marathon best of 2:44:27 at Manchester, 2nd with 88.26% and Matty Hynes 3rd with 87.66%. This proves age is not a barrier to success in running!
