Weekend Update - 15/06/14
Many of the UK’s top veteran runners descended on the Horwich Racing Festival for the British Masters National 5k Championships. New Marske’s Clive Thornton and Kath Aspin travelled down along with Sue Phillips of Darlington Harriers. The race formed part of a day long series of cycling and running events around a closed off Horwich town centre. The course was over an undulating 3 lap course with the last 500m of each lap being uphill. In the vet45 category Kath Aspin picked up a Silver medal finishing 2nd in 19:49 behind Jarrow & Hebburn’s Elaine Leslie. In a competitive vet45 men’s race, soon to be vet50 Clive Thornton had a good run to come 11th in 17:09. Sue Phillips (19:56) was 5th in the vet50 category and unlucky not to get a medal just 11 seconds behind 3rd place.
New Marske also had a strong presence at the Aycliffe 10k with Andy Wiles finishing 2nd behind Wondiye Fikre Indelbu. James Bulman was 3rd, John Clifford 6th, Paul Cleasby 34th, David Paley 69th, Stephen Bunn 123rd and Thomas Bunn 127th. For the ladies, Sharon Bulman went one better than her husband to finish 2nd lady.
In the Hardmoors Rosedale Trail Marathon, part of the popular Hardmoors series, Jo Goldsmith and Benda Wilkin had excellent runs to finish 32nd and 36th in 4:43 and 4:50. Fellow Hardmoors runner Shelli Gordon was taking a break following her recent 2nd place in the Hardmooors 160 mile race.
Charlie Pasco also picked up 1st place in the U20 1500m at the Northern Athletics Championships.
