Tees Barrage 10K - 06/05/13

Tees Barrage 2013

The sunglasses were out for the Tees Barrage 10K, and that was just to stop the glare from Gemma's shorts!   Jim Bulman fresh from his 2nd placed warm up at the Keswick Half the previous day got the better of James Askew to win the race in 33:29.  Kay Neesam, 40:30, was a close 2nd in the ladies race behind Dawn Richardson with Loftus's Nicola Kent just behind.  Also running were David Paley, Brian Allen, Gemma Parkin, Patricia Speedie, Ronnie Sherwood, 1st V70, Jim Conaghan, 3rd v75, Sandra Jemson, Dave Matthews, Julian Wilkinson and Terry Saffin.

Events of the North 2013, 4 different events in just one day, Team Relay, 10K, Full Marathon and Half Marathon, from start to finish organisation was very friendly and professional, great facilities and even a massage tent for those after race aching muscles.

For me it was my first Half Marathon and also the first Half Marathon for Sunderland which made it even more special, dark clouds were in the sky and the wind was a chilly one as everyone huddled together to keep warm on the start line, many wearing bin liners for protection as our teeth chattered.

The race started with a silence period as we all paid our respects to the Boston disaster.

A great turnout, runners with different coloured numbers on their vests indicating which race they were taking part in.

The route was through streets, main roads and a nice run in the park and as you kept running you could even cheer people on as they cheered you on from the opposite side of the road, great atmosphere!

Marshals and medical staff were flocking and water stations throughout meant you were well cared for, even the locals were on the side lines handing out jelly beans, jelly babies and many other treats to help tired runners along the way and give them excellent encouragement.

The finishing straight - what more could you ask for as you came back to the Stadium of Light, crowds of people cheering you on as you went through the finish line and watched the Full Marathon runners keep on going, more water was handed out and even something to keep you warm as you went inside the Stadium to collect your medal, T-Shirt and goody bag.

Well done to all New Marske Harriers who took part, you are all stars!

Today was a good day for a half marathon, granted the wind didn’t make for ideal conditions but the crowds made up for it, at every turn we were cheered on by locals bearing jelly babies, water and oranges! The course went pretty quickly and bar the end where I very nearly did an extra 13.1 miles it was very well organised, I'll be back next year at Sunderland, maybe for the 26.2!

Some good runs in the Half Marathon, with Jim Bulman 4th in 71:53 just 3 seconds off 2nd place and 46 seconds behind the winner.  Andy Pearson followed Jim home in 5th 75:12.   Gemma Parkin knocked nearly 7 minutes off her PB to finish 33rd lady in 1:41:33, with Patricia Speedie in her 1st half marathon finishing in a superb 1:44:05.

Just one runner in the full marathon with Peter Walker finishing in 3:51:08.

Three Harriers took the shorter 10K option, with David Paley 44:20, Sue Rowell 51:27 and Mick McGurk 1:06:19.

Hartlepool Marina 5 Mile Road Race - 07/04/13

The traditional firing of the cannon on the Hartlepool Historic Quay signalled the start of the Hartlepool 5 mile road race. 348 runners set off along the coast to Seaton Carew with blue sky and a gentle wind providing ideal running conditions.   Middlesbrough and Cleveland’s Greg Jayasuriya set off at a fast pace building up a 100m lead after the first mile.  New Marske’s James Bulman stayed with a pack of around 5 runners in the early stages before closing the gap on Greg along with Paul Marchant at the half way point.  Paul then edged away from James with Greg falling back in to third place not being able to sustain his early pace.  Paul Marchant went on to win the race in 25:53, James Bulman 19 seconds behind in 2nd with Greg edging out Nathan Reed to 3rd by 1 second.  In the ladies race Kerry Matthew of Middlesbrough AC lead from start to finish winning in 30:16 with Michelle Avery 2nd and Carolyn Ollis 3rd.  New Marske’s Kath Aspin came home 5th and 1st V45.   Other New Marske winners included Phil Miles 1st V70 and  Jim Conaghan 2nd V75.  Also running for New Marske  were David Paley, Erin Pearson, Nick O’Grady, Michael Carter, Sandra Jemson and Julian Wilkinson.

Wilmslow Half Marathon - 24/03/13

Oh to be a race director, heavy snow forecast, parking fields waterlogged, twitter users asking for info!   In the end there was no snow and the fields were frozen so the cars could park.

We nearly didn’t make the journey and when we got stuck on the M62 for an hour because of the snow we almost wished we hadn’t!  However the snow plough cleared the way and when we arrived at Wilmslow there was no snow at all.  Wish the same could be said about the wind, it was blowing a gale and only got worse on the morning of the race.  Our Premier Inn was only 400m from the start line so no rush to get there and good warm up facilities at the Rugby Club.

5000 people running so good start position needed which was remarkably easy to do as there were no barriers on either side of the road.  Kath was then spotted by an ex Loftus runner Mark Melbourne who happened to be running at the same pace so they ran together for the first ten miles.  At this point the course turned straight in to a strong headwind for the last few miles and all the runners had pained faces when ran by.

Kath’s aim was for a sub 1:30 and with a sprint finish she came in at 1:29:46 and picked up the 2nd v45 prize.
