Middlesbrough 10K  4/09/11

The weather appeared to be ideal for running on route to Middlesbrough, with cool, cloudy and still conditions. However as the family 3K run started the sun came out and provided rather warm running conditions.  Paul Cleasby warmed up for the 10K by running the 3k with his family.  There was a good turn out from New Marske in the 2586 runners in the 10K.   Some good results with Shaun O'Grady 13th overall and 1st in his age category.  In the W40 category we almost had a clean sweep with Kay Neesam 1st, Kath Aspin 2nd (4 seconds behind Kay) and Jo Goldsmith 4th.  Neil Walker was 3rd in the M50 category, and in the 70+ category we again had 1st, 2nd and 4th with Ronnie Sherwood, Phil Miles and Jim Conaghan.  Watch out for green T-Shirts at the track this week, what colour will it be next year?

Comfortable Win for Dom

P1500269P1500278

Dom Shaw ran a cracking race - going off hard from the start and opened up 50m gap within the first kilometer which was never threatened, finishing with a time of 15:43 His winning margin was 20s easing down from his New Marske clubmate Alan Piggford, who is steadily getting back to his best, having taken a few years away from the sport to concentrate on studies and work. There was a good battle for the leading lady to finish - Morpeth pair Melissa Turner and Sarah Wilkinson matched strides for the opening lap, but with about a mile to go Melissa struck for home and finished in 17:28, 9s ahead of her clubmate.

Redcar Half Marathon

Well done to everybody who completed the Redcar Half Marathon and thanks to those who volunteered to marshall, man the water station or other duties.  Having manned the water station for the first time I think it may have been easier to run the race!

The results have been corrected and from what I can see, are correct...

Apart from a hitch with the initially published results, the race went very well - here is a mesage from Andy Pearson to all those who voulunteered:

A big thank you to you all for being part of yesterdays event.  Without your involvement the race would not have been possible.  There are many positive comments coming in from the runners as we engage various forms of social networking (Twitter, Facebook).  This is a selection of comments made by runners who completed the race yesterday.

Melmerby 10k and Fun Run

Melmerby_10k

Run on quiet country lanes both the 10K and the 2.25 mile fun run started from the friendly village hall at Melmerby near Ripon.  Part of the Yorkshire Dales Race Series the 10K race attracted 229 runners but only one from New Marske this year.  Strong winds hampered the runners on parts of the course with the wind never managing to be a tail wind.  The narrow lanes and tall hedges in places made it warm going, but villagers dished out wet sponges every 2K.  In the fun run 9 yr old Thomas Aspin managed 2nd in the U11 boys race and 11 yr old Rebecca Aspin did well in the U14 girls race.  Dave Aspin managed 40:33 in the 10K.

Edinburgh Marathon

cP1460874

Having read many of the reports from previous years from local clubs there had been mixed reviews of the Edinburgh Marathon.  However, with the exception of limited viewing areas in the home straight, the organisation went well.    The weather forecast in the lead up to the race was concerning with gale force winds and rain predicted.  The organisers had two starts.  One for the faster runners and one for the slower runners, starting 10 minutes apart.  This appeared to work well with plenty of room in the pens and adequate toilet facilities.  Messages on the tannoy warned of expulsion from the race for anybody found in the bushes! A brief rain shower just before the race cooled the runners down.  Those that ran the race told me that it was scenic, most of it being along the sea front.  The last 8 miles proved very challenging with the runners turning to run directly in to the wind which increased as the race progressed.  All the Harriers had good runs with PB’s for some despite the wind.
