Northern Athletics Open Meeting Sheffield
By Toby Jones
As a photo finish operator you see a large number of races but do not often have the opportunity to watch one.
At Sheffield on Saturday 2nd December I was privileged to watch Charlotte Bennett provide a superbly executed performance in a 600m indoor race. Off the start she looked strong and appeared to be in second position as they came off the stager but was jostled by the bigger members of the field in to fourth place. Rounding the second bend Charlotte started to fight her way back up the field, having to take the long way round the next two bends to pass the leader. In the second lap she pushed the lead out to about 10m. Down the back straight for the final time the girl in second pushed for the line and caught Charlotte on the home straight. I was not able to watch the finish as my job in the event was to capture the finish on the photofinish system. Reviewing the photo finish image Charlotte came second.
I would like to congratulate Charlotte on an excellently executed run against strong opposition.
Brilliant performances from Amy Carter, Ben Holden and Jordan Thrower. A gold each for Amy, 80 m hurdles in 11.75, and Jordan 300m hurdles in 47.1 A silver for Ben in the 100m in 11.57 and a bronze in the 200m with a time of 23.77.
Amy also finished 4th in the 200m 26.04, while Jordan finished 6th in her triple jump with 10.62m.
Many Congratulations to our new Northern champions and medal winner.
NEYDL MATCH 4 HEXHAM 16/07/2017
Report by Helen Jones
It was another glorious sunny day at Hexham for the final competition of this years NEYDL league. We had a full bus of athletes, officials, coaches and parents, all singing our way up to Hexham. We had several families who met us there also.
As Officials we had a very busy day officiating at 4 events, so sorry there are not more photos for this match. Busy seamed to be the theme for the day.
The following are some PB’s that the athletes on the bus got, but I am sure there were more from those with their own transport, so an exceptional well done to everyone. The first on the list was actually from the last event of the day, but I think we saved the best until last. One of our U17 Javelin throwers, Charlie Jefferson, not only improved on his PB by a massive 5metres, but he broke the league record and the club record which has stood for over 20 years. 46.35m Well done Charlie!!

Unless anything changes we finished 4th in the league overall, less than 10 points away from 3rd. This is a great result as we remain in the first division for next year’s competition. Many thanks to all that competed for the team, and all the helpers that ensue these events run. Special thanks to Jean Cole our team captain for many years, who knows the ins and outs of everything, and usually finds a solution to most problems!!
T&F League Match 2- Jarrow – 4th June 2017
Report by Dave Aspin
Where were you? If you are an U17 or above and did not attend get in touch with Stewart Hart to take part in the next event. Never done it before, don’t think you are good enough: get in touch for a chat as all the athletes who took park had a great time, even me, despite being lapped twice in the 5000m!
Some great individual results including Ben Holden with PB’s in the 100m 11.3 and 200m 23.2. Kath Aspin ran her all time best aged graded race (88.32%) on her way to a 3000m PB of 11:05:08 which places her 4th in the V50 UK rankings following this up with 5:26.2 in the 1500m putting her 6th in the UK Rankings.
Georgia Noble and Samantha O’Hara made their New Marske debuts and both enjoyed it! Hannah Raine made her senior debut throwing a PB in the Javelin. Trish Speedie had a PB in the 800m 2:57.7, Eli Barnbrook PB also in the 800m 2:33.4 and PB’s for Kellen Hadfeld 200m 25.3, Adam Walker Triple Jump 9.14m and Ian Howse Shot 8.81m and Hammer 21.06m .
None of this could have been achieved without our Track officials, Kev Speedie, Jean Cole, Julian Wilkinson, John Hutton, Helen Jones and Toby Jones.
Apologies to anybody I have missed.
Looking forward to seeing more members at the next event!

Congratulations everyone who competed today in the above match.
